A Shetland pony and Newfoundland puppy have struck up an unlikely friendship.

Five-year-old Dom is one of eight Newfoundland dogs owned by licensed Newfie breeder Emma Bone, 33, from Hexham, and her husband Mark, 40.

The couple run a small home-based show kennel called Newfangled Newfoundlands.

The cute animal duo only met for the first time last week when four-month-old Sutton joined the family – however, they are already smitten with each other.

According to Emma, the inseparable pair frequently give each other kisses and groom one another, as well as taking naps and going for strolls together.

She told Metro: “We aren’t quite sure if Sutton thinks Dom is a horse, or if Sutton thinks he is a dog, or maybe a bit of both.

“Sutton chatters to him and every time I step outside to go to Sutton, Dom is right there beyond excited, running back and forth to tell me to take him to see his buddy.

“You can tell Sutton gets excited when he sees Dom coming too.”

She added: “It has been amazing, and it makes my heart so happy to see them together.

“We can’t wait to continue to see how their bond strengthens and grows.”

Their friendship has been documented on Instagram page @livingwithbigdogs since Sutton’s arrival, however, as of last week sweet pair Sutton and Dom now have a profile just for recording their special bond too, @big_dog_small_horse.

The bio reads: “Ok these two love birds deserve their very own Instagram, so we made it!”

The account features a number of heart-warming photos and videos that show the miniature horse and his slightly bigger doggy partner-in-crime snuggling up together, running around and even wearing matching hot pink bibs for dinnertime.

A recent video of the duo in their ‘twinning outfits’ has already racked up more than 1,700 views.

According to some of the posts, the pair’s adorable ‘Bromance’ has even led them to pick up habits common of the other species.

The caption of one shot, which describes the beginning of Dom and Sutton’s love affair, explains that after several days of the Newfoundland licking the Shetland foal’s face, he was eventually licked back.

It adds: “I couldn’t help but burst out laughing when Sutton started licking Dom’s face back while maintaining a confused look on his face as if to say “Why are we doing this?””

Mother-of-three Emma also previously joked to Metro: “We seem to have acquired another pony-sized dog.”

The family also have two Sphynx cats and a rabbit named Bunderella.
