Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele has emerged as a major transfer target for Newcastle United with negotiations already reported to be underway.

The French forward will be out of contract at the Camp Nou next summer and talks over a new deal at the club have come to a standstill.

Dembele’s future now remains in the balance and he looks increasingly certain to leave the Catalan giants next year, either on a cut-price deal in January or as a free agent next summer.

The 24-year-old has had an injury-hit four seasons at the Blaugrana and the club’s well-documented precarious financial situation means that they are needing to cut costs.

Barca have offered Dembele a new contract on reduced terms but the player’s representatives have not given a positive response to the proposal and his future may now lie away from the club.

Dembele currently earns a salary in the region of £8.4million per year at the Camp Nou but any offer which would see him stay at the club would need to see a significant reduction on that.

French media outlet Foot Mercato now report that Newcastle have already opened negotiations with the player’s representatives over a money-spinning offer next summer, when the player is out of contract.

The Magpies are said to be planning on offering Dembele the security of a long-term contract over the course of five years with an annual salary of £12.6million – a significant rise from his current salary – while an additional signing on of the same value.

That would represent an overall financial commitment from Newcastle in the region of £75million on the player – a significant fee, despite not having a transfer fee attached, which would likely rise further when agent fees and all add-ons are incorporated into the final price.

The reports comes in the aftermath of Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian-backed takeover being processed this month, giving the North East club access to huge reserves of wealth.

The Magpies interest follows report that Liverpool want to sign Dembele next year amid separate reports that Barca are suspicious that the player has been offered to multiple Premier League clubs as his representatives prepare for a move on a free transfer.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are the clubs who the Catalan giants are ‘suspicious’ have been contacted by Dembele’s agent Moussa Sissoko over a potential deal.

Dembele has been sidelined by a hamstring issue, having been hampered by a catalogue of injuries since joining Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund for £121million in 2017.

A wide forward who is capable of playing on either flank due to his two-footed ability, Dembele is able to utilise his technical ability, speed, and agility to beat opponents and open defences.

The 24-year-old has already clocked up 27 international appearances for France – with whom he won the World Cup in 2018 – and his natural talent is what makes him such an attractive proposition for top clubs.
