Huge fines will be thrown at people refusing to wear face masks from today.

New rules have come in this morning, November 30, mearning first-time offenders will be fined £200, with repeat offenders liable to pay up to £6,400.

Masks are now compulsory on public transport and in shops, while people arriving in the UK from abroad must isolate until they get a negative PCR test result.

The new regulations were agreed in Parliament yesterday and will see fines for breaking the rules increase with each offence.

The first rule break will cost £200, the second £400, the third £800, the fourth £1,600, the fifth £3,200 and the sixth £6,400.

The rules will not apply to the hospitality sector in restaurants and pubs, at concerts or events.

The reintroduction of masks in England in shops will bring the nation back closer into line with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
