New College Durham announce their first virtual school leavers open event

Year 11 pupils are invited to register for New College Durham’s virtual open event on Saturday 21 November at 10am. The event is designed to help students understand the options available when they finish school.

New College Durham offers a range of programmes to suit students’ career goals. For students who have a career in mind and who prefer practical and hands-on learning, the college offers a diverse range of vocational course options. With courses available in all areas; from construction to health and social care; from graphic design to business; from sport to beauty; from media to catering and from plumbing to childcare to name just a few.

The Northern Echo:

For those who are looking to progress to university and prefer more academic courses, the college holds a record of success with its A-level provision. The college’s pass rate stands at 100 per cent in 20 subject areas (2018/19 year when exams were sat) and the college boasts one of the largest sixth form centres in County Durham.

The college also offers apprenticeships for those who know what career they want and just want to get straight into working. New College Durham is the top performing college in the North East LEP for apprenticeship achievement rates (Skills Funding Agency National Achievement Rate tables 2018/19, based on timely achievement) so is the right choice for anybody considering this route. They offer over 70 different apprenticeship pathways and work with over 350 employers.

The Northern Echo:

For those who want to combine working and studying, the new T-Level qualifications are also available at New College Durham. T Levels are a 2-year course, equivalent to 3 A-Levels. They have been developed in collaboration with employers so the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work, further training or higher study. They offer students a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience through an industry placement of approximately 45 days.

Studying at New College Durham offers an environment where students are treated like an adult and benefit from a campus based experience with an on-site Starbucks and Costa, along with gym facilities.

The virtual open event will give students an insight into what studying at New College Durham is like and they will have a chance to join curriculum talks on the subject areas they are interested in. Find out more and register for the event now on their website.
