Netflix’s You actor Penn Badgley ‘doesn’t enjoy’ playing Joe as he admits season 2 ‘struggle’

NETFLIX'S You actor Penn Badgley has admitted he "doesn’t enjoy" playing Joe ahead of season two.

The 33-year-old actor plays a sadistic stalker who killed the woman he loved during the show's first season.

Unsurprisingly, Penn doesn't always enjoy playing the creepy character, telling Digital Spy: "There's a lot I don't enjoy about him. To be honest, I don't enjoy nearly everything about him.

"However, it ends up being a deep, deep psychological exploration for me. And it seems to bear fruit. "There's a lot about him that I struggle with and yet I'm always trying to humanise him as much as possible."

The highly anticipated second season will see Joe flee to Los Angeles after he murdered his girlfriend Beck in New York.

Once there, he meets a new love interest - handily called Love - but things don't go according to plan when ex-girlfriend Candace, who Joe thinks he killed, returns seeking revenge.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Sera Gamble opened up about her decision to keep Candace alive, compared to the Caroline Kepnes novel, which saw her drown.

She said: "We knew we were going to start flashing back to Candace, as Caroline does in the book.

"We just wanted to do something more surprising and [we also realised] that she was such a substantial and interesting character."

However, one character that may not be back is Dr Nicky (John Stamos), who is in prison after being framed for a number of Joe's murders.

Sera previously said it was "too soon to say definitely whether John Stamos will return in season two".

She added to The Hollywood Reporter: "But we have been talking a lot about the character and we're excited to keep telling that story."

You series two premieres on Netflix on Boxing Day, December 26.
