Netflix is known for breathing life into films (Cobra Kai, You) to give them a brand new audience. In giving Squid Game a platform, it has ignited interest in Korean cuisine which viewers of the hit show cannot seem to get enough of.
New data reveals Korean-inspired recipes are the most in demand amongst British viewers. Data from HelloFresh reveals searches for ‘Korean Cuisine’ have skyrocketed by 550%.
Tteokbokki, the Korean snack that Gi-Hun treats his daughter to in the first episode of Squid Game, has seen a 250% surge in Google searches.
It is a sweet treat that sits on the top of the list, with searches for ‘dalgona’ candy that have risen on Google by a whopping 1650%. Dalgona also known as ‘Ppopgi’ is a thin honeycombed candy with a design on the top which forms one of the challenges in Squid Game.
Netflix is doing more than simply entertaining the masses. It has also kickstarted a cultural phenomenon as evidenced by the entry of the Korean dish Bulgogi into the Oxford English Dictionary.
Korean cuisine is experiencing a surge of interest in Britain with searches spiking 550%, as revealed by new online search data from HelloFresh. Fans of the show who are curious about Korean cuisine and want to cook dishes at home can get Korean recipe inspiration from HelloFresh.
