Actor Ned Beatty has died at the age of 83.

The actor, famous for his roles in Superman and Network and for being the voice of Lotso in Toy Story 3, passed away in his sleep on Sunday while surrounded by family at his home according to TMZ.

The cause of death was not revealed, but the publication reports that it was not Covid-19 related.

The Kentucky-born actor was once described as "the busiest actor in Hollywood" and had a career which spanned over five decades.

He broke out onto the scene in Deliverance but will perhaps be best remembered for his standout monologue in 1976's Network.

Ned played TV/communications chief Howard Beale who was trying to convince the protagonist to stop resisting a major merger deal that would go on to have a negative affect on the masses.

The monologue earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 1976 Oscars even though it was one of his only appearances on the hit show.

Born on July 6, 1937, the actor was well known for playing Southern yokels and didn't seem to have any regrets about not landing more lead roles.

He once told People magazine that they were "more trouble than they're worth".

He added: "I feel sorry for people in a star position — it’s unnatural."

Ned is survived by his wife, Sandra Johnson, and his eight children and grandchildren.
