My partner of five years abused me both mentally and physically… but I don’t know if I should press charges

DEAR DEIDRE: I’VE been given two weeks to decide whether to press charges against my abusive partner. I’m not sure what to do.

We were together for five years but he’s become more and more controlling. He began to get more and more physical as time went by, too.

I know I should have left the relationship earlier but it wasn’t easy. I still loved him. We had good times, too.

I’m a 30-year-old woman. My partner is 33. With the help of the police I got away from him three weeks ago.

He’s been given two week’s bail. I’m waiting on an injunction but I don’t know whether to press charges against him.

DEIDRE SAYS: I see how difficult it feels to press charges. It may be the police will charge him themselves if you back off but think how freeing it could feel finally see him face justice.
