My Cousin Vinny climbs rental chart after bizarre Rudy Giuliani reference

My Cousin Vinny appears to be experiencing a surge in popularity after Rudy Giuliani unexpectedly referenced the film during a press conference.

It shared the top of the chart with more recent releases such as The New Mutants and Let Him Go. Holiday classics such as Elf and Home Alone also seemed to be back in high demand.

Earlier this month, Giuliani, Donald Trump’s lawyer, brought up a scene in which Pesci’s character Vinny cross-examines a witness in court.

Vinny asks the witness to tell him how many fingers he’s holding up, having moved far away from her. The witness, who has bad eyesight, guesses incorrectly.

Giuliani referenced the scene in an attempt to bolster baseless claims about the 2020 presidential election and the way it was administered. Both Tomei and director Jonathan Lynn have reacted to the unexpected shoutout.

“I regard Giuliani's praise of My Cousin Vinny as generous from the man who is currently giving the Comedy Performance of the Year,” Lynn told The Hollywood Reporter.

My Cousin Vinny earned Tomei the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1993 for her performance as Mona Lisa Vito.
