My boyfriend’s parents are racist and it’s making me question our future

HOLD YOUR TONGUE

DEAR DEIDRE: I SIT at dinner with my boyfriend’s parents and have to bite my tongue. They are racist and homophobic and I’m not sure how much longer I can live under the same roof.

The problem is I have nowhere else to go. I moved in before lockdown because of arguments with my stepfather. I’m a woman of 23.

His dad loves Trump and Brexit and everything I’m against.

Every problem gets a personal reply, usually within 24 hours weekdays.

He’s made racist or homophobic slurs before but when I’ve said “You can’t say that” he just answers, “I can say what I like. I’m old.”

It’s just no excuse. Heaven help us if we ever have a child who is gay or friendly with kids who aren’t white.

I do love my boyfriend with all my heart, but his parents are terrible bigots.

DEIDRE SAYS: They’re kind enough to give you a place to live, so they do have some redeeming features.

We live in a diverse society regarding culture and sexuality and they are out of touch with their old-fashioned views.

You can be direct and firm while disagreeing, but still keep the peace. My support pack on assertiveness shows how.
