A mum who travelled 56 miles to a beach in lockdown to celebrate her son’s fourth birthday says she ‘didn’t think there was any harm’ in it.

Laura McGhee has insisted her group trip from Oldham, Greater Manchester to Formby beach in Liverpool, Merseyside was reasonable, saying she ‘wasn’t doing another birthday in lockdown’.

But police have blasted ‘reckless and irresponsible’ behaviour after turning more than 100 cars away and issuing 20 fines in the area at the weekend.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain, Ms McGhee said: ‘He’s only four so I’m not doing another birthday in lockdown.’

Pointing to her kids, she added: ‘We’ve done it with him, we’ve done it with him, and all he wanted to do was to come to the beach and I didn’t think there was any harm.

‘We drove here, we’re not around anybody, we all go to school together, we all live together. So this is what we’ve done.’

Current lockdown rules allow people living in England to exercise once a day within their local area. People can do so with their household, support or childcare bubble or with one other person from another household.

Community Policing Superintendent Graeme Robson has blasted people who flouted lockdown rules in Merseyside at the weekend.

He said: ‘This is totally unacceptable and shows a complete disregard for the government guidance, which is in place to protect not only ourselves but others around us.

‘To flagrantly flout the rules in this way is not only reckless and irresponsible but can result in a substantial fine, as we have seen today.’

He added that it is essential for to ‘take heed’ of Government advice so infection rates can continue to fall and restrictions can be eased.

GMB correspondent Nick Dixon has claimed the crowds ignoring lockdown rules have become a ‘frustrating situation’ for police.

He said: ‘If you are going out, do a bit of research and make sure that you can socially distance when you get there.

‘Regardless, if it’s not your local area then don’t bother going at all because you’re going to be breaking the rules.’
