WEIGHT WARNING

MORE Brits will be obese than a healthy weight within five years, a damning report warns.

Cancer Research UK analysis shows over 32 per cent of adults will be dangerously fat by 2027 — while only 31.9 per cent will be a healthy weight.

It comes as ministers junked plans to ban unhealthy buy-one-get-one-free deals as the cost of living crisis bites.

But the World Health Organisation warned the UK’s Deliveroo lifestyle is making us the fattest nation in Europe.

Being too fat raises the risk of illnesses including diabetes, heart and liver disease and cancer.

Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said: "These projections should serve as a wake-up call to the Government about the state of our nation's health.

"Ministers mustn't keep kicking the can down the road when it comes to tackling the obesity crisis."

Dr Julie Sharp, head of health and patient information at Cancer Research UK, said: “If these staggering trends continue, obesity will eclipse smoking as the biggest cause of cancer.”

Tam Fry, from the National Obesity Forum, said being obese is becoming the "new norm".

He added: "The prediction of 21 million obese adults by 2040 could well become 30 million by 2050 if no drasticc action is taken very soon."

Dr Julie Sharp, the charity’s head of health, added: “If these trends continue, obesity will eclipse smoking as the biggest cause of cancer.”

Meanwhile, the the Early Intervention Foundation charity has warned fewer than one in five pre-school children are getting enough exercise.
