Arsenal are back in the top half of the Premier League table, and just a point behind neighbours Tottenham Hotspur, after extending their unbeaten run to six games on Friday night.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was heavily involved in the 3-1 win at home to Aston Villa, converting the rebound from his own saved penalty and then laying on the clinching third goal for Emile Smith Rowe..
The Gabon international is almost halfway towards equalling last season's tally of 15 goals in all competitions, and needs just eight more to bring his Arsenal tally up to 100 since joining from Borussia Dortmund.
It's not just the captain's form in front of goal which has impressed manager Mikel Arteta, though, with Aubameyang's other qualities drawing just as much praise in the aftermath of the victory.
"I wouldn't go to the goals, again it is what Auba is transmitting on the pitch," Arteta said ahead of Arsenal's midweek Carabao Cup clash with Leeds United.
"I have never seen Auba transmit what he is doing now.
"Apart from the goals, the celebration when they put the ball in the net, do you see the way he runs, the purpose he has to press the ball, and when he takes it his movement, his link, how is leading the game - that is when he is changing the rest, not when he is static and then he puts the ball in the net.
"I prefer this Auba."
Aubameyang, who was named Arsenal captain during the 2019-20 season, has three goals in his last four Premier League appearances - more than he managed in his last nine league outings last term.
However, as noted by the Gunners' manager, his work in front of goal is only part of what goes down as an all-around improvement.
"For me it is a click," Arteta said.
"It is a combination that realising that his role has to go well beyond that.
"What was good, or very good, two or three years ago, with his role in this team, at this club, it is not enough."
After losing their first three league games of the season, Arsenal have picked up 14 points from their next six to sit just three points outside the Champions League spots.
Aubameyang has also contributed in the Carabao Cup run, scoring a hat-trick in the second round victory over West Bromwich Albion.
A third round win against AFC Wimbledon has set up the London club's last-16 clash with Leeds United, against whom their captain scored a hat-trick in the league last season.
The Whites sit seven points and seven places below Arteta's team, having won just once in nine Premier League games this season.Read More Read More
