A memorial football tournament is to take place later this month to celebrate the life of "well-kent" East Kilbride man and football coach, Dougie Craggs.

His good friend, Craig Ferguson, is organising the tournament and subsequent function to bring the community together to remember Dougie. All monies raised will go to three charities.

Dougie passed away last May after battling a brain tumour, leaving behind a wife and one-year-old daughter.

The popular St Leonard’s man had been involved in coaching young players across the town at Greenhills Dynamo, EK FC and East Kilbride Rolls-Royce.

So Craig felt it was only right that Dougie is celebrated through a football tournament. He told Lanarkshire Live: ”Dougie was a good friend and a well-kent man in East Kilbride.

“Everybody knew him, he was connected to youth football, he was a big Celtic fan and he was massively involved in the community.

“Tragically, he passed away last year during lockdown and all the restrictions, so his funeral was limited.

“People lined the streets to say their goodbyes to him. Everybody turned out to see him off, but we feel we didn’t get to give him the send-off he truly deserved. So I thought this football tournament would be the best way with a function afterwards and a raffle etc with money going to charities that helped Dougie over the years.”

The Dougie Craggs Memorial Cup will take place on Sunday, September 26 at K-Park in East Kilbride from 2pm to 5pm.

Dougie was connected to football throughout the community

Four teams all connected to Dougie will be taking part; Greenhills Dynamo, Kick it for Kyle Select; Dougie Craggs Select and Rolls Royce U16’s.

A function is to be held in the British Legion EK afterwards with money raised from donations and raffles going to three charities.

Craig explained: “I expect the function afterwards will be an emotional part of the day but we want to celebrate Dougie and his family.

“We're going to show a slideshow and really make a night of it in Dougie’s memory.

“He was a great man that gave everything to the community.

“Michael Woods, who owns the St Luke's pub, has donated a full buffet and we’ve got prizes coming in from everywhere for a raffle.

“We’ve picked three charities that at some point were linked to Dougie, the Brain Tumour Charity, Kilbryde Hospice and the Beatson.”

The community is encouraged to join in thecelebrations of Dougie's life. Anyone who requires more information or would like to make a donation should visit the event’s dedicated Facebook page by searching for Dougie Craggs Memorial Cup.
