Commuters travelling to and from Manchester Victoria face delays and cancellations after reports of a member of staff being threatened with assault.

Passengers have be warned of train cancellations and long delays to services until atleast 9pm tonight (December 19).

Commuters say there are no trains running in or out the station while Northern and Network Rail described the incident as "a passenger disturbance".

An announcement on the station referred to a member of staff being threatened with assault, witnesses told the M.E.N. a man "shouted" at the worker, which prompted the station staff to walk out.

A statement posted on the Northern Twitter feed said: "Due to passengers causing a disturbance on a train at Manchester Victoria some lines will be blocked."

Another update on Network Rail said: "An operational incident at Manchester Victoria and also a points failure at Castleton is resulting in delays of up to 40 minutes to trains running through Manchester Victoria.

However disruption is now expected until 9pm.
