Manchester United transfer news LIVE 'Solskjaer makes Bruno Fernandes plea' plus Harry Maguire and Ruben Dias latest

Manchester United got their pre-season under way with comfortable 2-0 victory against Australian side Perth Glory on Saturday.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and James Garner secured the morale-boosting win, though it was debutant Daniel James who stole though show in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's experimental side.

The Welsh winger impressed with his blistering pace and has left fans hungry for more after his 45 minute performance.

United are also interested in Leicester's Harry Maguire and Sporting's Bruno Fernandes, while Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku continue to be linked with exits. Inter Milan's chief executive says he's "optimistic" that a deal for Lukaku can be struck.

Latest reports in Portugal suggest boss Solskjaer is struggling to convince the United board — and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward — that the playmaker would be worth a fee in excess of £50million. Sporting reportedly value the player at £65million.

We'll bring you all the latest Manchester United news and transfer gossip throughout the day.

More from Robson

On agents’ influence in modern football:

“I think players are influenced far too much by their agents - instead of making their own decisions.

“Sometimes maybe you want some advice on who to sign for and when to move, but at the end of the day, you’re your own person and you can show the path that you want to follow in your career. And I don’t think many players do that - they’re always taking advice from their agents.

“Agents want players to move on because they make money. If a player is loyal to a club and stays there, the agent doesn’t make as much money. I think that’s a big influence not just at Manchester United, but all over the game.

“I think players should sometimes take a good look at themselves in the mirror and make what they want to of their career.”

Bryan Robson on Pogba

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has been speaking to Sky Sports about the Paul Pogba situation at Old Trafford after it was revealed that the Frenchman wants to leave.

“You’re a Manchester United player, you’re contracted to them so you have to give everything for the club, the team and the fans.

”There’s a lot of speculation in the media about Paul. He is a top player.

“Get your head down, do your pre-season as well as you can - which, from what I’ve seen in the training sessions, he has done - and if something happens and the club want it to happen, or nothing happens then you’ve got to get on with it.”

Solskjaer 'battling to convince' United board over Fernandes

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ed Woodward are reportedly at loggerheads over a potential transfer for Bruno Fernandes.

Reports suggest Solskjaer is trying to convince Manchester United executive vice chairman Solskjaer that the Sporting CP playmakers is worth more than £50million — with the Portuguese club holding out for £65million.

Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha says Solskjaer is battling to convince the United board that Fernandes, 24, would be worth the money.

Leeds star expecting 'great spectacle'

Leeds defender Barry Douglas has been speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post about the upcoming pre-season clash with Manchester United:

“We’re looking forward to it. Obviously it’s a bit further adrift than usual but it’ll be a good experience.

“The rivalry between Leeds and Manchester United is going to be a great spectacle and experience for us.

“It’ll also give us that little bit of experience if we can go one further this year.”

'United in race for Chalov'

Manchester United are named as one of several Premier League clubs looking to sign Russian wonder kid Fedor Chalov.

The CSKA Moscow forward is also on the radar of Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal and Tottenham according to the Mirror, who claim he will be available for £20million.

The 21-year-old is a highly rated forward who scored 15 goals to be the Russian Premier League’s top scorer last term.

Gomes on tactics

Angel Gomes revealed to MUTV about what Manchester United have been working on, on the training field and how that was put into practice against Perth Glory.

“We’ve been working hard, trying to get the front-foot press and trying to create and score as many goals as possible.

”We’ve got very quick, direct and pacy players and we tried to press, stay high, get everyone locked up. We did that so we would create more chances, win the ball up higher and try to dominate the game.“

Coutinho future update

Philippe Coutinho’s agent Kia Joorabchian has provided a fresh update on the player’s future, admitting it would be “very difficult” for the Brazilian to join a rival of his former club Liverpool.

Coutinho’s Barcelona future appears unclear and he has been linked with United.

“The information from Barcelona is rather mixed,” Joorabchian told Sky Sports News.

“We had a meeting last week with the president [Josep] Bartomeu and other directors, and they told us he was absolutely not for sale, that they have never spoken about the boy leaving, that they had never offered him to any club.

“Although there is a guy that works for them called Andre Cury, who apparently has been touting him about - but the president has told us he is categorically not for sale.

“I think Liverpool lies very, very deeply in his heart. He was a big fan of them throughout the campaign [last season].

“He was wishing for them to win the title and he has a very strong affinity there so I think it will be very difficult for him to go to a direct competitor of Liverpool from a personal standpoint.”

Solskjaer is finally getting what he wants at United

Manchester United have been made to wait for a return to winning ways under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Following an awful end to last season which saw United last record victory on 13 April with a scrappy home win against West Ham, even an unglamorous 2-0 win over Perth Glory was warmly received.

It was a match in which United would never get any real credit. Anything other than a win would be regarded as disappointing, while a win was never going to raise many eyebrows.

However, for Solskjaer the process remains far more important than results in pre-season, and United are beginning to show signs that they are learning lessons from the Norwegian coach.

Inter chief 'optimistic' about Lukaku

Inter chief executive Giuseppe Marotta is “optimistic” about concluding a deal to sign Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku.

“Yes, I am optimistic about everything,” he said when asked if a transfer could still be done.

Lukaku didn’t feature in United’s 2-0 win over Perth Glory but told reporters “You guys will know something next week” - with MEN Sport understanding that United want a cash deal of around £75million for the Belgian.

Leeds squad for United friendly

Diego Costa on the move - United in the odds

This would truly be a strange one, but United are in the betting - admittedly at long odds - to sign Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid.

Wolves are the favourites to sign the former Chelsea striker, according to Betway:

Wolves 5/4

Everton 11/4

Inter Milan 33/1

Manchester United 33/1

Six United players praised by Solskjaer after Perth win

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased with the performances by six Manchester United youngsters in the 2-0 win over Perth Glory.

Four academy graduates started United’s pre-season opener at the Optus Stadium and Solskjaer made 11 changes at half-time with the scoreline goalless.

Marcus Rashford broke the deadlock on the hour mark and James Garner - a late substitute for the injured Luke Shaw - scored his first senior goal to seal victory.

New signing Daniel James completed 45 minutes in the first-half while fellow new recruit Aaron Wan-Bissaka played out the second-half. Solskjaer name checked the duo, as well as the teenage academy quartet in his full-time assessment.

Maguire 'angry' about price tag

Leicester City defender Harry Maguire is reportedly ‘angry’ about the Foxes’ valuation of him, which is pricing him out of a potential move to Manchester United.

The Sun report that Maguire has told Leicester teammates he wants to move. MEN Sport understands the Reds have bid £70million, an offer which was rejected.

Leicester are holding out for big money for their 26-year-old centre-back, with reports of an £85million asking price.

Manchester United confident of more signings in transfer window

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ‘optimistic’ Manchester United will make more signings in the transfer window.

United have spent £68million on Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka already this summer and want to sign at least two more players, amid interest in Leicester defender Harry Maguire, Newcastle youngster Sean Longstaff and Sporting Lisbon talisman Bruno Fernandes.

Leicester rejected United’s £70m offer for Maguire at the start of the month and Newcastle have demanded £50m for the 21-year-old Longstaff. United admire Fernandes but have not made a concrete enquiry for the Portuguese.

United won their pre-season opener against Perth Glory 2-0 at the Optus Stadium but executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is not currently in Australia. Woodward is believed to have called Newcastle about Longstaff at the weekend but head of corporate development Matt Judge has been tasked with negotiating deals.

What Paul Pogba said when asked about Manchester United future

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba says there is ‘no need to talk’ about his future at the club amid intense speculation regarding a potential transfer.

The French World Cup winner continues to be linked with a potential exit from Old Trafford after he sparked fresh rumours early in the summer by revealing he was considering a ‘new challenge’.

Pogba’s future was then thrown into further speculation by his agent, Mino Raiola, who revealed he was in the process of working on a potential deal for the France international.

The 26-year-old featured for United during their 2-0 win over Perth Glory on Saturday, but after the game he refused to comment on the transfer speculation and insisted there was no need to discuss it further.

When asked about his future following the win at the Optus Stadium, Pogba replied by simply saying: “There is no need. No need to talk.”
