Manchester United are set to battle Liverpool to sign Brighton youngster Ben White as a result of his excellent performances for Leeds - according to reports.

White, 19, moved to Elland Road in the summer in search of regular first-team football and has made a huge impression in the Championship, enjoying a key role in Marcelo Bielsa's back four.

The England U19 international is yet to experience life in the Premier League but has made 16 appearances during his loan spell with the Whites.

The Athletic claim both Liverpool and United have registered an interest in the defender. The report claims Jurgen Klopp has a real interest in the youngster while United have scouted White as they continue to look for young, homegrown talent that can improve the squad.

United spent a world record fee to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester in the summer but his defensive partner Victor Lindelof has failed to impress at times this season.

Elsewhere, reports claim Atletico Madrid are interested in signing United midfielder Nemanja Matic in the January transfer window.

MEN Sport reported earlier in the month that Matic was unhappy with his current situation under Solskjaer, behind Scott McTominay and Fred in the pecking order.

Matic would consider leaving the club in January and has been linked with a move to Tottenham to reunite with Jose Mourinho.

Nevertheless, ESPN claim Atletico have entered the race for his signature. The 31-year-old is also a target for Serie A side AC Milan but Madrid's participation in the Champions League could see them hold the advantage in negotiations.
