Manchester United fans have laughed off suggestions from Liverpool supporters that their new signing Thiago Alcantara is a better piece of business than the Reds re-signing Paul Pogba from Juventus.
Thiago has dominated the headlines since the transfer window opened after signalling his intention to leave Bayern Munich with just one year remaining on his current contract. Liverpool have always been favourite for his signature but reports claimed United rivalled the Merseyside club for his signature.
However, MEN Sport understand United were not prioritising the Spaniard with Bayern believed to have used their name to speed up Liverpool's move for the former Barcelona star.
Thiago arrives on the back of winning the Champions League with the German champions and it didn't take long for fans to compare the midfielder with Pogba.
Liverpool fans on Twitter have suggested their most recent transfer represents better value than United re-signing Pogba from Juventus for a then world-record fee.
United fans have laughed off their claims and believe the Frenchman remains the superior player.
Last month, former United striker Wayne Rooney claimed that Liverpool signing Thiago would effectively end the title race for next season.
He told talkSPORT: "I think it is City or Liverpool [for the title]. Chelsea are making a lot of signings, some good signings. Man United have a lot of potential in the players they have got but I still think they are a year away.
"Chelsea with the new signings will possibly need a year to get everyone on the same song sheet.
"So I do think it is between City and Liverpool. And if Liverpool get Thiago from Bayern Munich, I think it is done [the title]."
