Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of new interim manager Ralf Rangnick, but suggestions he was heavily involved in the build-up to the draw with Chelsea appear wide of the mark.

Caretaker manager Michael Carrick took charge at Stamford Bridge, leading the team to a 1-1 draw in his second game in charge while the Red Devils prepare to welcome Rangnick.

Carrick made a number of big calls in selecting his team for the game against the league leaders, prompting suggestions the German was behind some of the thinking.

However, new revelations suggest the bold decisions - including dropping Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench and using Bruno Fernandes as a false nine - were all Carrick.

Carrick described his team selection as "A few tweaks and changes to freshen things up," and later insisted the decisions were all made with no input from United's incoming boss.

Rangnick's arrival has been delayed by visa issues, but he is expected to be in the dugout in time for the weekend meeting with Crystal Palace and could even be in Manchester in time for Thursday's game against Arsenal.

And, according to The Athletic, Rangnick had a solely watching brief for Sunday's draw in west London.

The German, apparently, watched the contest in Germany and had zero involvement, despite the sudden appearance of earpieces in the United dugout..

United confirmed Rangnick's appointment on Monday, detailing the two-part deal he is believed to have agreed at Old Trafford.

Rangnick will take interim charge until the end of the season, and will remain at the club in a consultancy basis for a further two years.

Carrick kept faith with Jadon Sancho after the winger's goal against Villarreal, and the 21-year-old netted for the second time in as many games to give United the lead.

The caretaker manager took issue with the penalty decision which saw Jorginho level the scores from the spot, but was pleased with his team's performance.

"When you are in front in a game like this to have it taken away is disappointing," he said.

United are believed to be considering a number of contenders for the permanent manager's spot, with Rangnick's interim appointment allowing them to take their time over a decision.

One of the leading contenders is believed to be Mauricio Pochettino, whose Paris Saint-Germain side looked unconvincing in their win at Saint-Etienne on Sunday.

PSG fell behind early and only got themselves in front in the final 15 minutes, despite playing half the game against 10 men.
