Donny van de Beek sent Timothy Fosu-Mensah a supportive message after the former Manchester United defender suffered a serious knee injury.

Fosu-Mensah, who left United to join Bayer Leverkusen in January, will miss the remainder of the campaign and faces another lengthy road back to fitness.

The 23-year-old tore his anterior cruciate ligament and was forced off at half-time of Leverkusen’s Bundesliga match against Freiburg on Sunday.

The Netherlands international fell awkwardly after getting his boot stuck in the pitch, and although the German club have not put a timeline on his recovery, he is likely to miss this summer’s European Championship.

His former team-mates at United were quick to send messages to the Dutchman, with Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay both wishing him well on social media.

“Thinking about you,” wrote Rashford on Twitter. “You will be back even better Tim,” McTominay wrote on his Instagram story. “You will achieve amazing things in your career. Wishing you all the best.”

Van de Beek , who played with Fosu-Mensah in the Ajax academy, also sent him a message.

“Stay strong brother, I always have your back! I wish you a quick recovery,” he wrote on his Instagram story.

The injury is a cruel blow for Fosu-Mensah who left United in search of regular game time and who was making just his seventh appearance for his new club.

It is the second time Fosu-Mensah has suffered an ACL problem, having previously sustained a similar injury when on loan at Fulham in the 2018/19 season.

Manchester United were denied a penalty in controversial fashion against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players were furious that Callum Hudson-Odoi wasn't penalised for a handball, as they had to settle for a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge. The point leaves United 12 points behind leaders Man City, with Crystal Palace the next opponents.

Fosu-Mensah joined United from the Ajax academy in 2014 and made his senior debut in 2016.

He made 30 appearances for the club, but struggled to break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team and opted to join Bayer Leverkusen in January.

Leverkusen, who lost 2-1 to Freiburg on the weekend, are sixth in the Bundesliga table, five points adrift of the top four.
