Manchester City have been told that they have a goalkeeper who can go all the way to the top in on-loan youngster Gavin Bazunu.

The Republic of Ireland international is on loan at Fratton Park in League One this term, after impressing at Rochdale last season.

He made headlines earlier this season when he denied Cristiano Ronaldo from the penalty spot while representing Ireland, while he has also put in some eye-catching performances for Portsmouth.

However, it hasn't all been plain sailing for Bazunu, who made some high profile errors in Pompey's defeat to Rotherham recently as he temporarily lost his place in goal.

Now, though, the 19-year-old has won back his starting spot and kept successive clean sheets — including in the 1-0 win over Gillingham at the weekend.

And his performance has earned praise from Pompey boss Danny Cowley, who has tipped the goalkeeper to be a 'top' player in his career.

"He’s going to be top," added Cowley, who called Bazunu's outing against Gillingham 'flawless'.

"He’s going to be a top goalkeeper. One thing I wasn’t concerned about was how he was going to respond to a couple of mistakes that he made.

"I just believe so much in him, in his competency but also him as a human being."

Bazunu himself has earmarked the City goalkeeper spot as his target for the future, despite sitting behind Ederson and Zack Steffen in the squad. He signed from Shamrock Rovers in 2019 and has gone on to make 50 appearances on loan for Rochdale and Portsmouth.
