A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance after police closed off the Tyne Bridge for almost two hours overnight.

Just before 10.30pm on Sunday night, Northumbria Police received reports of concern for the welfare of a man on the Tyne Bridge,Newcastle.

When they arrived, officers closed off the bridge and spoke with the man in question until around 12.15am on Monday morning when he was brought to safety.

The force has now confirmed that the man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance and remains in custody at this time.

Officers have since thanked the public for their patience and cooperation.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 10.30pm yesterday (Sunday) we received a report of concern for the welfare of a man on the Tyne Bridge, Newcastle.

"Emergency services attended the area and the bridge was temporarily closed as officers spoke with the man in question.

"Shortly after 12.15am today (Monday), the man was brought to safety. He has since been arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance and remains in custody at this time.

"We would like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation."
