A suspected gunman has been named after a pistol was found stuffed inside a bag for life during a police raid at a garage.

The 60-year-old was charged after police swooped on the premises in Garston.

A gun was found hidden inside a carrier bag as police raided residential garages in Long Lane around 9.30am on Thursday.

Police released images of the weapon and confirmed a man had been arrested at the scene.

Today Merseyside Police confirmed a man had been charged in connection with Thursday's raid.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "Detectives have charged a man following the seizure of a firearm in Garston yesterday.

"At around 9.30am, officers carried out a warrant at garages on Long Lane. A pistol was recovered and a man was detained.

"60-year-old Antonio Belli of Allerton Road, Mossley Hill has now been charged with possession of a firearm and remanded in custody."

Belli was due to appear at Wirral Adult Remand Court this morning, Friday June 18.

Police have said the weapon will be checked by forensics to establish whether it is linked to any incidents in Merseyside.
