Man, 33, who ‘ran pregnant girlfriend off road before shooting her dead’ charged with murder of her and unborn daughter

A MAN has been charged with the murder of his pregnant girlfriend and their unborn daughter after allegedly running her off the road and shooting her dead.

James Jones, 33, was arrested after the body of Cassia Renee Duval, 29, was found in a car that had crashed into a ditch in Wayne County, North Carolina on January 29.

Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce said deputies found Duval near the intersection of Nahunta Road and Pikeville-Princeton Road at around 11:15 p.m.

Her car appeared to have been run off the road, and she had died from a gunshot wound.

Jones and Duval, who was seven months pregnant at the time of her death, lived together and had been dating for around eight years.

Their unborn daughter, who was reportedly to be named Aspen, did not survive.

Speaking to CBS17 shortly after the incident, Jones said he was too upset to appear on camera, but that he and Duval had been looking forward to the birth of their daughter.

He said she had been energetic, goofy, athletic, and fearless.

He was arrested two weeks after her death and charged on one count of murder and one of murder of an unborn child.

Duval was a manager at a Waffle House and also practised Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Her father, David, himself a homicide investigator based in Virginia, said he hadn't been surprised to her that Duval's boyfriend had been charged.

"It does bring me some relief," he said.

"Just because... the majority of the time it's someone you know.

"It's been a nightmare.

"The worst part that I have seen is, I have the same job as the investigators down there and I've worked these death scenes and it's just, to comprehend that being your daughter and granddaughter."

A funeral was held for Duval in Virginia earlier this month.

An online obituary said she had been "full of life..., outgoing and loved her daughter Aspen and family."

"She looked forward to being a great mom to Aspen and spoke of the many 'firsts' she was looking forward too," it said.

Jones is being held without bond at the Wayne County Jail in Goldsboro.

Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact the Wayne County Sheriff's Department on (919) 580-4023.
