Maisie Smith was just six-years-old when she made her first appearance on EastEnders.

The soap star, who has been wowing viewers with her sensational dance moves on Strictly Come Dancing this year, has the same confidence now she used to land the role over 12 years ago.

Having already appeared as a young Elizabeth I in big budget movie The Other Boleyn Girl, Maisie was no stranger to the big stage.

But her big break came when she was cast as Tiffany Butcher back in 2008.

Being the daughter of Bianca and Ricky Butcher, Tiffany was always going to be a feisty character and have that famous ginger hair like her mum.

And Maisie knew she needed to bring out some outrageous antics to land the part.

Maisie Smith was only 6 when she got the EastEnders job

The young actress admitted she was "quite a cocky little minx" when she walked into her EastEnders audition.

She landed the part thanks to bags of confidence and a very sassy entrance as she "strutted" into the room and chucked her lines to the side.

"I had so much confidence as I wasn’t 100 per cent sure what I was meant to be doing," she told Inside Soap magazine of her crucial audition.

"I just knew that I had to learn some words – so when I went in there, I’d just memorised them.

"I just threw the script on the chair and said, ‘I don’t need that, I already know what I’m doing.’

"From that moment, I think they knew I was meant to be Tiff."

Maisie's first episode aired on April Fool's Day in 2008, but there was nothing foolish about her incredible performance.

The youngster started filming for four days a week and was taught by a tutor on set when she missed school.

Her mum, Julia Smith, explained that her daughter shared a lot of similarities with her character.

"The role is an exaggeration of her own personality, she's a little madam," explained Maisie's mum to the Basildon Echo in 2008.

Maisie was a very confident young actress

"A lively character both on and off screen. The difference is, she's told to pronounce her t's at home!"

"She is not star-struck at all and has her feet very firmly on the ground. She is an extremely confident child and a great actress."

Maisie formed a particularly close bond with Patsy Palmer, who played her on-screen mum Bianca, with viewers pointing out they even looked incredibly similar.

"I love being on EastEnders. I really get on with Patsy who plays my mum. She looks after me so well. It’s like I’m her real daughter some days," said Maisie in December 2008.

She also explained that legendary EastEnders star Pam St Clement, who played Pat Butcher, was also lovely to her.

Maisie returned to EastEnders with a bang

Maisie added: "I’m glad I get to be cheeky and say some funny lines. I would never want to be a goody goody.

"It’s strange people point at me in the street now and ask if I’m the girl from EastEnders. All my friends think it’s great I’m on television. I think I will want to be an actress forever now."

Maisie was written out of the show after six years when her on-screen mum Patsy Palmer quit Walford and moved to Los Angeles.

But she made a temporary comeback in November 2016 for half-sister Whitney's wedding day before returning as a full-time character in January 2018.

"I can’t wait to show everyone how much Tiffany has changed," Maisie teased ahead of her anticipated return.

As well as continuing in her EastEnders role, Maisie is now lighting up our screens every weekend on Strictly Come Dancing.

But it took some fans by surprise when they saw a throwback of Maisie during her early EastEnders days - with many confessing it made them feel quite old.

Even just seeing the comparison to Maisie then and now left many viewers feeling "ancient", over how much she had changed.

Taking to Twitter, one fan said: "OMG I haven’t seen Eastenders in about eight years and I’m like this over the fact that is little Tiffany."

"Tiffany is so grown up - all Strictly is doing today is making me feel ancient," another added.

A third added: "It makes me feel old that shes 19 tho. She was wee when I watched Eastenders."
