Motorists are being warned that the M74 southbound is set to close over night between Junction 5 and Junction 6 for essential maintenance works.

Works will take place from Monday, August 17 to Wednesday, August 26, 2020, between 8pm and 6am each night. The road will re-open as normal out with these times, and there will be no weekend working.

This work will be carried out by Scottish Road Partnership (SRP) on behalf of Transport Scotland and will be delivered by maintenance company Amey.

The scheme requires full overnight closures of the southbound M74 while this work is taking place, with a signed diversion route in operation.

Southbound traffic on the M74 will be directed to join the A7071 and travel via the B7071 Bothwell Road. From here vehicles will travel to the A72 and then onto the A723 to re-join the southbound M74.

Vehicles joining from the M74 on-slip road at Junction 5 will follow the same diversion.

The work has been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, the emergency services, the South-West Operating Company and South Lanarkshire Council.

A spokesperson for Amey said: "We fully recognise the importance of a safe and reliable trunk road network, particularly during the Covid-19 outbreak, and it is vital that essential maintenance works are carried out in order to maintain the integrity and safety of these routes.

"Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable."
