Warning to drivers
Highways England have warned drivers that traffic has been STOPPED due to the 'police incident'.
The #M6 northbound #J25 (#Wigan #A49) to #J26 (both directions)(#OrrellInterchange #M58) traffic has been temporarily STOPPED due to a Police incident. Traffic Officers & @gmptraffic @NWmwaypolice are on their way to the area.— Highways England (@HighwaysNWEST) August 2, 2021
Public motorway cameras show total gridlock on the M6 near Junction 26 (M58).
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said the force had 'several calls' from around 7.20pm to say a man is walking south on the northbound carriageway.
Rule 6 of the Highway Code says that pedestrians MUST NOT be on motorways or slip roads except in an emergency (like when a car has broken down).
M6 closed in both directions
North West Motorway Police have now stopped traffic on both sides of the M6 between J25 and J26.
Officers say a pedestrian is 'crossing both carriageways' and that the force is making a grade 1 response'.
We have stopped the traffic on the Northbound and Southbound #M6 J25 to J26 due to a pedestrian crossing both carriageways Live lane.
