Traffic has been stopped in both directions on M6 after a pedestrian crossed the carriageway.

All traffic has been held close to junction 25 (Wigan) and junction 26 (Orrell Interchange) since around 7.55am.

The incident was initially described as a 'police incident' by Highways England.

However, North West Motorway Police have said the closure is due to a pedestrian crossing both carriageways.

A spokesperson for North West Motorway Police said: "We have stopped the traffic on the Northbound and Southbound M6 J25 to J26 due to a pedestrian crossing both carriageways Live lane.

"We will keep you updated. Police are making on a grade 1 response."

As a result of the closure, there is heavy traffic in the area.

Traffic website, INRIX, said: "Congestion to J22 (Newton Le Willows) heading Northbound and also back to J27 (Standish) heading South. In the roadworks area.

"All lanes have been re-opened."
