Liz Truss jets off to seal another Brexit trade deal paving way for £110billion agreement

Emily Thornberry says Liz Truss is ‘like Johnson in a blue dress’

Ms Truss became a firm favourite among Tory members after securing dozens of post-Brexit trade deals as International Trade Secretary. Taking on her new role as Foreign Secretary last week, Ms Truss is looking to continue promoting trade with the UK around the world.

The South West Norfolk MP will today travel directly from the UN General Assembly in New York to Mexico City.

During her visit she will hold talks with her Mexican counterpart, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

Mexico is due to be the world's seventh biggest economy by 2050 and boosting trade with the Central American country is a key part of the Government's post-Brexit strategy.

Earlier this year the UK applied to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Mexico is one of the 11 countries to make up the free trade group.

If Britain is given permission by its members to join the group, it will be the trade area's second-largest economy after Japan.

The CPTPP already represents 13.4 percent of global GDP and is worth approximately £9.9trillion a year.

Countries in the group accounted for £110billion worth of UK trade in 2019 and UK trade with CPTPP member countries grew by eight percent annually between 2016-19.

The Foreign Secretary will call for Mexico to support Britain's accession to the CPTPP and also discuss proposals for a new bilateral UK-Mexico trade deal.

Ahead of her visit, Ms Truss said: "Closer ties with Mexico are a key part of our plan to strengthen economic, security and diplomatic links with like-minded allies who share our belief in free enterprise and free trade.

"A trade deal with Mexico, for example, will pave the way for us to join the CPTPP, one of the world’s biggest free trade areas.

"Our relationship with Mexico has huge potential.

"It could open vast new opportunities for businesses, support jobs across Britain, and help ensure we play a key role in an open and dynamic Indo-Pacific."

While in Mexico Ms Truss will also formally open the new British Embassy building in Mexico City.

The previous embassy was damaged in an earthquake in 2017.

Ms Truss was promoted to Foreign Secretary in the cabinet reshuffle last Wednesday.

She replaced Dominic Raab in the prominent role to become the first-ever Conservative MP to take on the position.

In a move widely seen as a demotion, Mr Raab was appointed as Justice Secretary.
