Liverpool kept their Premier League title bid on track with a thumping 4-0 win over Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

A brace from Diogo Jota, along with goals from Thiago Alcantara and Virgil van Dijk, took Liverpool to within a point of league leaders Chelsea and left Jurgen Klopp purring.

Although Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane didn't net against the Saints, they were, as they always are, pivotal for the Reds - which only goes to highlight the huge problem Klopp will face when the duo head off to the Africa Cup of Nations in the New Year.

With that in mind, it seems like a no-brainer that the Reds will be active in the January transfer window.

Mirror Football takes a look at the latest transfer news from Anfield...

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard returned to the Premier League earlier this month to take charge at Aston Villa - and it seems as though he's already plotting a transfer raid on Anfield.

The Mirror understands that Gerrard wants to strike a deal for defender Joe Gomez in the new year.

Although Gomez has recovered from the major injury that curtailed his campaign last year, Gomez has struggled to get a look-in on Merseyside this season.

The £36million arrival of Ibrahima Konate in the summer has knocked Gomez down the pecking order; something that Gerrard is keen to take advantage of in January.

He's hoping to persuade Gomez and Klopp to sanction a temporary move to Villa Park for the 24-year-old in a desperate bid to improve Villa's shoddy defensive record.

It remains to be seen if letting Gomez go would be something that Klopp would entertain with last year's injury crisis at the back still fresh in the memory.

Although Klopp bolstered his defence with Konate in the summer, it appears he's not done beefing up his rearguard just yet if reports are to be believed.

According to ESPN, the Reds are one of a host of European clubs currently monitoring Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo's contract situation.

The 22-year-old only has 18 months left to run on his current agreement at the Camp Nou; which could lead to a scramble for his services next summer.

Barca are desperate to tie the Uruguay ace down to a new long-term deal, but they've so far been able to strike a deal with Araujo.

And they may struggle to do so with both Liverpool and Chelsea lurking.

West Ham ponder deal for Reds duo

Nat Phillips has barely featured for the Reds this year

West Ham are another Premier League club who are hoping to strike a deal for a Liverpool defender in January.

According to The Sun, West Ham are desperate to snap up a defender in January after Angelo Ogbonna was ruled out for the season.

And whilst the Hammers are prioritising a move for Burnley ace James Tarkowski, they reportedly have both Ben Davies and Nat Phillips on their list of alternative targets.

Davies hasn't made a single appearance since signing for Liverpool last year and is currently on a season-long loan at Sheffield United - but the Reds are able to cut that short if a permanent exit can be arranged.

Phillips deputized heroically for the Reds last year in their injury crisis but has slipped down the pecking order this year and could be available for a cut-price fee or a loan exit.
