Liverpool have it all to do in the second leg after they slumped to defeat in Spain.

There was to be no happy return to the scene of last year's Champions League triumph as Saul Niguez's early strike earned Atletico Madrid victory.

The hosts found the breakthrough in the fourth minute. Liverpool failed to clear a corner and Saul was on hand to tap home from close range.

The Reds were almost caught out when a Virgil Van Dijk mistake allowed Alvaro Morata in, but Alisson saved the striker's low shot.

Mohamed Salah had a goal ruled out for offside, leaving the Premier League leaders with a one-goal deficit to overturn in the return fixture at Anfield.

Here's how Jurgen Klopp's men rated:

Sadio Mane endured a frustrating return to the starting XI

Alisson 7

No chance with the opener but made a crucial save to deny Morata

Alexander-Arnold 5

Highly unusual to see him skew a coupe of crosses into the crowd

Gomez 6

Booked. Actually looked the more assured of the central defensive pairing

Van Dijk 5

Looked flustered, couple of glaring errors, a rare unconvincing display

Fabinho looks dejected as Saul Niguez celebrates

Roberston 8

Some quality defending and always looked a threat going forward

Henderson 6

Covered his customary amount of ground but passing slightly off

Fabinho 7

Took a while but eventually got some sort of foothold in the game

Wijnaldum 6

The most adventurous of Liverpool midfielders but not much came off

Mohamed Salah failed to find a breakthrough
