Water pollution and the global plastic crisis has been pushed to the forefront of environmental issues recently.
But there is one Liverpool family that has been tackling the plastic problem way before David Attenborough started talking about it.
Tom Caddick’s great grandfather first started clearing the oceans more than 50 years ago, when he created the Bootle Barge.
He was responsible for taking waste and cargo from ships in the Liverpool docks and transporting it away using his barges.
Now four generations later, his water cleaning invention is still operating through the family business Water Witch.
Tom, 23, and his family still operate from Bootle to this day, where all the specialist boats are made from the ground up.
Since 1965 hundreds of Water Witch boats have been made and they clear the waters in more than 36 countries across the world.
Speaking to the ECHO, Tom said: "These vessels have collected over 2.1 million tonnes of plastic and other debris from around the world.
"Our family is very passionate about the sea, I myself and my father and my grandfather, are all scuba divers, so we have a great passion for the sea.
"We just want to keep it clean, there is nothing worse than being out there in the beautiful environment and then seeing plastic floating past."
An estimated eight million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year from land, while there is no single solution, Water Witch’s work is a step in the right direction.

Tom added: "There is a lot more work to be done and we hope that we can create more boats to pump our numbers up and collect more plastic from the environment.
"90% of all plastic in the sea actually originated from inland , so we target our boats in inland waterways, as well as coastal environments because it’s so much easier to collect the plastic before it goes to sea.
"Once it gets out to sea it is a huge problem and it can spread across different countries."
