The M6 in Cheshire has been closed after a crash involving a lorry and a caravan.

Emergency services are at the scene on the southbound carriageway between junction 18 for Holmes Chapel and junction 19 for Knutsford.

The motorway was initially only closed southbound but now traffic has been stopped in both directions

The crash reportedly involves a lorry and a caravan and Highways England have said a vet is on scene as a horse was in one of the vehicles.

A spokesperson for Highways England said there were delays of up to 40 minutes and six miles of congestion.

They said: "The M6 is closed between J19 and J18 due to a road traffic collision involving a lorry and a horse box. Cheshire Police are in attendance.

"There are currently delays of 40 minutes and 6 miles of congestion on the approach to the closure. Road users are advised to expect delays on the approach to the incident and allow extra time for their journeys.

A statement from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We're currently at a collision on M6 between junction 19 and junction 18 southbound.

"Both northbound and southbound carriageways are closed. If you are waiting, please do so in your vehicles.
