The M6 has been blocked off both ways this evening after a 'number' of serious crashes.

Emergency services are at the scenes of the collisions tonight, with drivers warned to avoid the motorway this evening.

The crashes have taken place between Junction 23 for Haydock Island and 26 for Orrell, near Wigan.

North West Motorway Police have tweeted: "The M6 north and south are totally blocked due to a number of RTC's - due to weather conditions, please try to avoid 26 to 23 sb and 23 to 26 nb - police and highways are making."

Highways England have said traffic is being held on the northbound carriageway, between Junction 24 for Ashton in Makerfield to Junction 25 for Wigan.
