Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has claimed that Lionel Messi is in negotiations over a new contract.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner could leave Barcelona at the end of next season under the terms of his current contract.
And there have been suggestions he is unhappy with the club’s leadership.
Messi has shown no sign of slowing down at the age of 33 with 27 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions so far this campaign, having also provided his team-mates with 25 assists.
But Barcelona have been more erratic than they would like in the league and are a point behind leaders Real Madrid, who have a game in hand on top of the final two rounds of matches.
Despite rumours that Messi has put contract talks on hold pending a decision over the future of manager Quique Setien later in the summer, Bartomeu declared that negotiations are underway and ongoing
The Barcelona chief said he is confident a deal will be struck to keep Messi at the Camp Nou.
Bartomeu confirmed talks between the club and their star player have restarted and the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus would not have an impact on their ability to pay Messi’s wages.
He told Catalan broadcaster TV3 : “We have discussed his contract renewal. We are still discussing it. And we will continue to discuss it.
“He has always said he wants to end his football career at Barca, and I’m convinced that will be the case.
“We will renew his contract, for sure. He is more than ready to compete for as many years as he can.”
The businessman simply said he does not think Paris Saint-Germain want to let go of any of their major stars this summer.
