A Lancaster pub has temporarily closed its doors as a result of the latest Government guidelines.

Bosses at The Pendle Witch, located on Penny Street, have taken the decision to close the venue until further notice.

It comes following the latest Government rules which saw the whole of Lancashire being placed under Tier 3 of the new three-tier system.

It means that the county is now on "very high" alert level as leaders try to drive Covid-19 cases down.

Under the new Tier 3 rules, all pubs and bars have been ordered to close.

However, such venues are allowed to remain open only where they operate as if they were a restaurant, which means serving substantial meals, like a main lunchtime or evening meal. They may only serve alcohol as part of such a meal.

Despite The Pendle Witch serving a food menu, the pub has still taken the decision to temporarily shut.

Bosses have thanked the local community for their support and say they look forward to welcoming customers back soon.

In a statement posted on social media, The Pendle Witch pub said: "Due to the recent government guidelines we will be closed until further notice.

"We would like to thank for your continued support and look forward to welcoming you back soon."

The new Tier 3 rules have placed increasing pressure on pubs and bars across the county, including limiting the number of customers they can allow.

New guidelines state that people in Lancashire must not socialise with anyone they do not live with, unless part of a support bubble, in any indoor setting or in any private garden or at most outdoor hospitality venues and ticketed events.

The move has further impacted visitor numbers across hospitality venues which have already been reduced throughout the pandemic as a result of social distancing measures in place.
