A Lancashire headteacher has hailed the 'unbelievable' response to her letter to parents 'surviving the pandemic' after it went viral on social media.
Sarah White penned the heartfelt message to parents of children at Coates Lane Primary School in Barnoldswick, saying that 'times are tough at the moment', with 'our mental health taking a battering'.
The mum-of-two explained how she is also 'feeling the strain' after three weeks of national lockdown and with juggling running the school and the 'immense amount of work' set for her kids.
She praised parents for what they are doing to get by and said they are 'all doing amazing'.
The letter, which has been viewed thousands of times, read: "Today I write to you as a mother first. This week has been tough. Week 3 of the lockdown and as a parent I have felt the strain this week.
"My own two children have been set an immense amount of work from their school and I literally haven't been able to keep up with it.
"Between juggling my own job, my children's school work and generally surviving a pandemic, I really felt the strain this week.
"Times are tough at the moment... out mental health is taking a battering. The dark, cold and rainy/snowy weather hasn't help so we need to support each other and get through this together.
"My main reason for writing is to say WELL DONE! You are surviving a pandemic.
"Whatever your personal circumstances, we think you are doing a great job. If your child has had lots of microwave meals, stayed up too late, played too much on the Xbox and not finished all their school work... THAT'S OK!
"We know our pupils are safe, loved and cared for and that is the most important thing at the moment."
She goes to say that 'all we ask is that you do your best' and 'if your best is a quick 30 minutes of reading or times tables here and there, that's OK'.
"Please do not let school work put any extra pressure on you when you are trying to hold down jobs, earn a living and keep your children safe," her letter adds. "Everyone's circumstances are very different and we appreciate that."
One person said: "What a beautiful letter of support. All parents need to hear this right now xxxx"
Another wrote: "So many people and their children are feeling pressure from so many directions right now, this letter would have helped to ease that pressure for so many of your parents. Sincerely, well done to you as a head and as a School for recognising that the mental health and wellbeing of your parents and children is the priority right now in this crazy world."
Another said: "Fantastic letter and what a wonderful head. My child is older but the pressure she is being put under is horrendous. All parents need to read things like this."
A fourth added: "A very important message. Think most people are feeling the strain trying balancing everything. Thank you for all your hard work and support xx"
After reading the responses and seeing the letter go viral, Mrs White posted another message on Sunday and hailed the 'amazing' community'.
She said: "Thank you so much to everyone who shared and commented on this post. The response has been unbelievable and not expected at all.
"My letter was written from the heart for our Coates Lane families but I'm very glad that so many people have found comfort in it.
"I have been contacted by lots of people/the media and I will respond tomorrow. Today, I am a mum and my children need me.
"Thank you again to everyone.. What an amazing community we are."
