Wales have suffered another hammer blow ahead of Saturday's clash with New Zealand with the news Ken Owens is out.

Wayne Pivac revealed the bombshell injury half an hour after Owens had been officially named in the side. He failed a fitness test on a back problem shortly before Pivac took his seat to face the media.

It means Ryan Elias starts at hooker, with Cardiff Rugby's Kirby Myhill being promoted to the bench. Myhill's addition to the squad was only confirmed on Thursday after Elliot Dee was forced to withdraw with a neck injury.

Pivac said: "The squad that went out at 12, there’s been a change to that. Ken Owens has withdrawn from the starting lineup. Ryan Elias goes into the number two jersey and Kirby is on the bench. That’s a late change due to a fitness test being failed this afternoon.

“It’s a big blow to lose any player that you’ve initially selected. We’ve selected a certain side and trained a certain way. It’s a disruption but it’s a massive chance for Ryan. It’s something he’s going to relish and look forward to."

Pivac is now set to add more players to his squad next week, with a number of players either out or struggling with injury niggles.
