Steve Bruce faces a host of key decisions this summer which could radically alter the make-up of the Newcastle United squad.

More than a dozen players face an uncertain future on Tyneside with their contracts due to expire next summer.

The ongoing financial ramifications of the Covid-19 pandemic means it will already be a difficult transfer market for all clubs to operate in.

Bruce has already highlighted free agents and the loan market as avenues the club will consider this summer, with former Burnley midfielder Jeff Hendrick strongly linked with a move to St James' Park.

But with budgets slashed, the United head coach could look to offload fringe members of his squad to generate much-needed cash. Those with deals running down could be ushered towards the exit door, while others will likely be offered new long-term deals.

Difficult decisions will have to be made with the Magpies surely keen to avoid losing certain individuals for nothing next year. But who should be offered a new deal, and who should be sold?

Here are the United players with less than a year left on their respective deals - give us your verdict in our polls below:

Aarons was rewarded with a five-year contract in 2016 after a dazzling start to life in black-and-white.

But the 24-year-old has never been able to nail down a consistent starting spot under successive managers.

The former England youth international returns to St James' Park this summer following loan spells at Wycombe Wanderers and Motherwell.

Despite a bright start to the campaign, Atsu has found himself on the periphery under Bruce this term.

The Ghanaian international turned down a loan move to Celtic in January to fight for his place, but he made just one appearance after the restart.

The 28-year-old could be set to depart, having initially loaned on a season-long loan from Chelsea in 2016.

The scene could be set for the Academy graduate to make his mark in black-and-white this season.

Barlaser was handed his Magpies debut by Rafa Benitez in January 2017 before heading out on loan to Crewe Alexandra and Accrington Stanley.

The 23-year-old impressed last season for Rotherham United as Paul Warne's side earned automatic promotion to the Championship.

The former United number nine secured an emotional return to St James' Park last summer.

Injuries continue to plague the frontman, but Carroll still did enough to convince Bruce to offer the striker a fresh one-year deal.

The 31-year-old made a number of impressive cameos, but will be expected to start finding the back of the net next season.

Ciaran Clark

Clark admitted he considered leaving United last summer after falling out of favour under Benitez.

However, the Republic of Ireland international enjoyed a renaissance under Bruce and was one of the Magpies' most consistent performers until injury prematurely ended his campaign.

The club are well stocked at the heart of defence, but the 30-year-old has seemingly established himself as one of the preferred picks.

Karl Darlow

Confusion has reigned over Darlow's future, with reports earlier in the year suggesting his deal was up this summer.

The shot-stopper is contracted to the club until next summer, but the club are reportedly willing to listen to offers.

The arrival of Mark Gillespie and Freddie Woodman's emergence could lead to a goalkeeping reshuffle, and Darlow could be keen to move to secure a starting spot elsewhere.

Federico Fernandez

Fernandez is another defender to enjoy something of a revival this term, and finished the campaign as the last centre-back standing.

The Argentine international become a mainstay in the starting eleven, partnering captain Jamaal Lascelles as Bruce opted to change formation later in the campaign.

United opted to exercise the option to extend his deal, and the 31-year-old will surely start next season as the first-choice partner for Lascelles once again.

Bruce has always talked up the former number nine's ability - even when he spent much of the campaign on the sidelines.

However, Joelinton's struggles and Carroll's continuing fitness woes meant Gayle finished the season as United's frontman.

The 29-year-old has staked his claim to remain the starting striker next season with four goals after the restart.

The former Arsenal midfielder has established himself as a key figure under both Benitez and Bruce.

However, personal circumstances initially led Hayden to seek a move away last summer, as well as concerns over the club's ambitions.

Bruce has confirmed he is keen to keep the 25-year-old on Tyneside, but an agreement has not been reached yet.

Henri Saivet

You could be forgiven for forgetting Saivet remains on United's books.

The Senegalese international has made just a handful of appearances in black-and-white since signing from Bordeaux in 2016.

Saivet was left out of the Magpies' top-flight squad last season, and it would surely take a drastic u-turn for the club to offer the 29-year-old another contract.

Fabian Schar

Schar's stock among the Magpies' fanbase has seemingly plummeted in recent months.

Hailed as one of the signings of the season a year ago, the Swiss international has fallen out of favour and struggled to impress in either a defensive or midfield role.

The 28-year-old remains an experienced squad option for Bruce, but he could also be viewed as a saleable asset given the club's defensive strength in depth.

Woodman impressed on loan at Swansea City last season, with Swans' boss Steve Cooper stressing he would be keen to re-sign the 'keeper on loan.

The 23-year-old is also reportedly keen on a return to South Wales, with Bruce admitting another loan move could be beneficial for all parties.

With Gillespie and Darlow providing competition for Martin Dubravka, United could look to agree another contract extension before allowing Woodman to rejoin Swansea on loan.

It has been a difficult season for Yedlin, with Emil Krafth and Javi Manquillo moving ahead of the USA international in the pecking order.

Recent reports have suggested the 27-year-old could be set for a return to the MLS.

An agreement suitable to both the club and the player could be struck this summer.
