Kate Garraway has shared the heartbreaking story that her son sleeps beside his dad’s empty bed each night as he continues his battle against coronavirus that has left him in a coma.

The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain star has been living in agony for the past ten weeks after her 52-year-old husband Derek Draper fell ill with the deadly COVID-19 virus.

Derek has been in an induced coma to try and help him beat the illness, while Kate has offered updates for fans.

The TV host says their 10-year-old son, Billy, has been hit hard by Derek’s illness and has made a den beside his father’s bed at home where he is sleeping at night.

Explaining the sadness felt by the family, Kate told The Sun: “Derek is such an amazing dad. He’s brilliant with the kids, and that’s one of the reasons why this is so hard. It just doesn’t feel right without him,

“One of the things that makes it so sad is that I know he would have loved this, our time together in lockdown. He was never happier than being in this house, just the four of us.”

She continued: “He is such a homebody. He would say, ‘It’s just you, me and the kids’ and he’d be so happy just pottering about, being here and doing a bit of work on his computer.”

Derek has been in a medically induced coma for ten weeks

She shared a photograph of Billy curled up on pillows, cushions and throws beside Derek’s bed at the family home.

She also explained that Derek’s favourite sun chair is waiting for him in the family garden.

She said: “No one is allowed to sit in that. It’s Derek’s. He sits there when it’s sunny and says, ‘It’s so lovely here — who needs posh Tuscany?”

Derek was rushed to hospital back in April after falling ill with a painful shoulder and sinusitis.

When he developed breathing problems, Kate was advised by GMB colleague Dr Hilary Jones to call an ambulance.

Kate and Derek have been married since 2005

Although Derek displayed no COVID symptoms and was free of a cough and temperature, tests came back positive for the disease.

He has suffered set backs while in treatment – with even his heart being restarted by medics.

Kate and Derek also have a 14-year-old daughter named Darcey.
