A master of defence himself, Jose Mourinho has claimed he thinks Gareth Southgate will deploy a back-five for the highly anticipated Euro 2020 last-16 clash with Germany.
The Three Lions set up a tie with a familiar foe after finishing top of their group courtesy of two 1-0 wins over Croatia and the Czech Republic either side of a 0-0 draw with Scotland.
They will now meet Joachim Low’s Germany after 'Die Mannschaft' came second in the 'group of death' that also featured Portugal, Hungary and tournament favourites France.
Whoever comes away from Wembley triumphant will face one of Ukraine or Sweden, who face each other before England's clash ensuring Southgate will now what potentially awaits his team.
Southgate's side were boosted by the returns of crocked stars Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson, while Mourinho believes that the former should remain in the starting eleven when Germany visit Wembley on Tuesday evening.
"I keep saying when you have an option to take 26 players, you have to risk, gamble and take an injured player if the player deserves that," Mourinho told talkSPORT.
The self-proclaimed special one continued: "Maguire is one of those players. He was confident, he was stable, he was intelligent [against the Czech Republic].
"He read the game well and he has a good partnership with Stones.
"Mings is doing a fantastic job, you could feel he was happy to come in for 10 or 15 minutes, he is a team player.
"I wouldn’t be surprised if the next game is against Germany, the way they play with Havertz, Muller and Gnabry, three defenders and two wings backs, I wouldn’t be surprised if England went with three at the back – Stones, Maguire and Mings."
Southgate has often been criticised for the defensive nature of his tactics, but they could prove useful when it comes to stopping a German attack that boasts some of the most talented names on the continent.
The likes of Serge Gnabry, Kai Havertz and Thomas Muller can win any match on their own, meaning a five-man defence could prove to be Southgate's best chance of nullifying opposition attack.
