Johnny Depp has claimed he battled deadly bug MRSA after undergoing surgery to reattach his severed finger.

The actor, 57, has returned to London's High Court for a fifth day giving testimony as part of his libel case against News Group Newspapers.

During this morning's testimony, Depp was asked about an alleged bust-up with his ex-wife Amber Heard and her sister Whitney.

In her witness statement, which was read out to court, Heard alleged Depp "punched me repeatedly" and grabbed her hair in an incident in Los Angeles on 23 March 2015.

The actor denied being violent towards her and insisted he was still recovering from a finger injury he sustained in Australia earlier that month.

He flew back to LA after severing his finger for surgery, and claims he then caught MRSA.

Depp told the court: "I went back to LA to have surgery - they put a pin in my finger and I ended up catching MRSA, which is quite a painful disease."

He called claims he attacked Heard "ridiculous" because he was wearing a cast on his hand at that point.

Depp had previously claimed his finger was severed during a heated row with Heard during their time in Australia, where he was filming a Pirates of The Caribbean movie.

He alleged the top of his finger was cut off when Heard threw a glass vodka bottle at him during a fight.

In a previous statement, the actress claimed he'd hurt his hand while smashing a plastic phone against the wall repeatedly and she was not present at the time of the injury.

Amber Heard arriving at court today

During last week's explosive testimony, the court heard how Depp had then used his mangled finger to scrawl a message in blood on a mirror after a heated row with Amber Heard in Australia in 2015.

While the heard rented house they had been staying in during the trip was left with $150,000 damage.

Another key point during last week's testimony was Depp's claim that he found a poo in his bed after a row with Heard over her birthday party in 2016.

In his witness statement, Depp claimed he decided to end their marriage in 2016 when a poo was left in their marital bed, which he believes was left by Amber or one of her friends.

During his testimony on Friday, the court heard Depp had been sent a picture of the poo by his assistant and replied with a series of jokes - calling his wife "Amber Turd”' and adding "Amber’s in the dumps".

The testimony also covered the actor's drug addiction and issues with alcohol, with a picture of Depp sprawled on the floor of a hotel room being shown to the court.

Depp also described how he writhed in agony and lay on the floor "sobbing like a child" as he went through detox during a stay on his private island in the Bahamas in 2014.

Johnny Depp libel trial latest

Depp has denied he was ever violent towards his ex-wife and has accused her of abusing him during their marriage.

Lawyers for NGN are defending their case based on Heard's 14 allegations of abuse, which include claims of bust-ups between 2013 and 2016.

The actor has argued his ex-wife was abusive towards him during the marriage, which collapsed in 2016.

The case continues.
