Joey Barton says it is 'nice to put one across them again' after claiming Fleetwood pipped Sunderland to the signature of winger Barrie McKay on transfer deadline day.

Barton secured the loan deal of the Swansea City man, whom he was familiar with having played alongside him at Rangers.

But he claims to do the deal he had to beat off late interest from Sunderland - revealing his delight that he was able to do so.

He told the Blackpool Gazette: "I played with Barrie at Rangers, then he got a move to Forest and did really, really well.

“They intended to sell him to Olympiakos and it never quite materialised. They ended up selling him to Swansea under Graham Potter and again he did really well.

“The new manager (Steve Cooper) has come in and there’s a change of ideas. I couldn’t believe he was available because you would expect a Championship club or one of the big Scottish teams to take a player of his quality.

“We’d monitored him all the way through but late in the window he was available at Fleetwood prices and luckily for us we got him signed.

“At the last minute Sunderland tried to do the deal but we had the paperwork done, so it’s nice to put one across them again.

“The beauty of such a small club is that there’s no real bureaucracy and we can get things done quickly. We were all in the same room on Friday night.

“The speed we could move at gave us a great advantage in the market place on Friday night. We could get our business done, then relax and look forward to Saturday’s game.”

Sunderland did sign a forward on deadline day, as they secured a loan move for Antoine Semenyo. Despite the announcement coming late in the day, the deal was actually processed with the EFL prior to midday, which allowed the 20-year-old to go straight into the squad the next day at Portsmouth.

The delay in the official announcement came because Semenyo's parent club Bristol City wished to announce an incoming signing of their own beforehand.

Whether Sunderland really did make a late move for McKay remains to be seen, but there was murmurs on the day of the Black Cats looking at a move for a third signing, adding to the capture of fellow Swansea man Declan John.

McKay could feature against Sunderland for Fleetwood later this month. The pair clash at the Stadium of Light on February 25.
