A White House statement stated the two Presidents agreed to extend their New START nuclear treaty and to “maintain transparent and consistent communication going forward”. At a press conference about Mr Biden’s executive order on racial equality, the President was asked about the call with Mr Putin despite details already being released.

Peter Doocy, White House correspondent for Fox News, challenged the new President to reveal what he and Mr Putin discussed on their phone call.

He asked: “Mr President, what did you talk to Vladimir Putin about?”

In response, Mr Biden snapped back at the reporter and joked the Russian President was asking about Mr Doocy.

The President added: “You. He sends his best.”

Jon Cooper, former national finance chair for Draft Biden 2016, shared the clip on Twitter.

He said: “It’s amazing to see this slap down of Fox News by Joe Biden.”

One Twitter user mocked the Fox News correspondent, and said Fox news would be be “so outraged about Biden’s truthful response.”

Another user praised Mr Biden for his clap back, and said: “Nothing sleepy about Joe!”

Twitter users also questioned whether Mr Biden should respond to the press with jokes, complaining it reminded them of Donald Trump.

Maury Brown, Forbes contributor, said: “I get it and I don’t. Imagine Trump doing this with a CNN reporter.”

Another user responded: “This was a clever, witty jab. Trump insulted and bullied reporters. Not the same.”

Other’s pointed out the White House statement on Mr Putin and Mr Biden’s phone call was released before his press conference.

A White House press statement shared Mr Biden also challenged Mr Putin on the arrest of Alexei Navalny.

It said: “They discussed both countries’ willingness to extend New START for five years, agreeing to have their teams work urgently to complete the extension by February 5.

“They also agreed to explore strategic stability discussions on a range of arms control and emerging security issues. President Biden reaffirmed the United States’ firm support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

“He also raised other matters of concern, including the SolarWinds hack, reports of Russia placing bounties on United States soldiers in Afghanistan, interference in the 2020 United States election, and the poisoning of Aleksey Navalny.

“President Biden made clear that the United States will act firmly in defence of its national interests in response to actions by Russia that harm us or our allies.”

It comes after Mr Biden snapped at a reporter who asked about his coronavirus vaccine plan in his first briefing as President.

Zeke Miller, from AP, asked: “You set the goal at 100 million vaccines in the first 100 days — is that high enough?

“Shouldn’t we set the bar higher? That’s basically where the U.S. is right now.”

President Biden responded: “When I announced it you all said it’s not possible.

“Come on, give me a break, man. It’s a good start, 100 million.”
