Jobseekers in Hull could get half-price travel over Christmas after the Jobcentre Plus introduced the Travel Discount Card.
The cards have been introduced to provide some relief for people's transport costs when finding work, for instance with travelling to job interviews.
But it could also be a welcome source of help for people wanting to go and visit families this Christmas.
Some benefit recipients, including those on Universal Credit, will be able to get a discount on selected rail tickets and bus journeys.
The Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card is free and anyone who is unemployed and has been claiming Jobseekers Allowance or Universal Credit may be eligible.
Jobseekers aged between 18 and 24 will have had to be claiming for three to nine months to qualify, while for those aged 25 or over it is three to 12 months.
The card is worth up to 50 per cent off travel and is valid for up to three months at any one time. It is getting rolled out across England, Scotland and Wales.
Minister for Welfare Delivery Will Quince said: "We want to ensure there are absolutely no barriers for those seeking employment.
"Public transport can be vital for people who are looking for work, and the Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card cuts the costs.
"More than half a million journeys were made using the card last year - just another way we are helping people to save money and find work.
"And obviously there's the savings for people visiting families over the holidays as an additional bonus."
To find out if you qualify, contact your work coach. The Jobcentre can provide details of additional operators, including bus services.
