Jimmy Carr has revealed he enjoyed an unlikely friendship with the late Stephen Hawking.
The comic told the Daily Star he bonded with the scientific genius after sending him a message, including a sick joke about his condition.
Stephen suffered from motor neurone disease, an incurable illness which left him in a wheelchair and only able to speak through a computer controlled machine.
But instead of being offended, the world-renowned physicist – who died in 2018 at the age of 76 – responded, and the pair ended up becoming pals.
Jimmy revealed: "Once in a while you meet someone and hit it off unexpectedly. I had a close friendship with Stephen. Weird, right?"
He said the A Brief History of Time author would even get drunk at wild parties he would throw.
Jimmy’s friendship with Stephen began when he sent him an “insane letter” using an offensive word to describe his condition – although he doesn’t reveal what.
The 8 Out Of 10 Cats host also pretended he had a son with a similar condition and requested a playdate.
He said he never expected to hear anything back, so was shocked when Stephen replied with a “beautiful letter”.
“It said, ‘You’re never too old to play, but I’m afraid I’m very busy,” Jimmy recalled.
“Here’s a balloon ride. Maybe he’d like to go on one. They can put a wheelchair in the basket.”
Speaking about his other celebrity friendships, Jimmy said he considers James Corden one of his closest pals.
The stand-up comic revealed The Late Late Show host would phone him daily “just to check in”.
James was particularly there for him in 2012 when Jimmy hit the headlines for taking part in a tax avoidance scheme, which led to him having daily panic attacks.
Talking affectionately about their bond, Jimmy said: "James Corden called the day the story hit the papers just to check in, no judgment.
"He was, and is, a f***ing great guy."
Earlier this month Jimmy shared the happy news he had become a father for the first time.
The 49-year-old welcomed a son with long-time partner Karoline Copping two years ago – but kept it secret until now.
He let the cat out of the bag during a comedy gig he was performing at the O2 in Brixton, south London, as he was cracking jokes to the audience.
Prior to that he had been seen pushing a pram near his home in North London, where he lives with Karoline, who is Commissioning Editor for Channel 5.
The couple have been together 20 years after meeting at an audition, and the rest is history.
