YOU’D have thought Cristiano Ronaldo would have been too busy watching the beautiful game to give any thought to The X Factor.
But it turns out the Manchester United striker is a fan of one of the show’s biggest products – James Arthur.
The singer’s good pal Olly Murs has revealed Cristiano messaged James on Instagram to see if he would perform at his birthday party.
After hanging out with James at Soccer Aid last month, Olly explained: “He was telling me that Ronaldo was messaging him because he wants him to do his birthday party.
“There was me scrolling through my Instagram trying to find a DM from him and there was none there!”
Olly went on to explain he was a huge fan of Cristiano’s and had been begging his pal, former footballer and Man Utd’s technical director Darren Fletcher, to get him an in.
He added: “I’ve been texting Darren and said I’ve got to meet Cristiano.
“I don’t know how and I don’t know when, but just to meet the great man and talk to him.
“I’d love to get a photo with him and tell my children in the future because he’s one of the greatest ever footballers of all time.
“I want to tell my grandchildren that I met Cristiano Ronaldo at some time so I’m going to be badgering Fletch over the next two years he’s at the club to try and meet him.”
Surely the best thing to do is get James to add you into a group chat, Ol.
Or better still, wangle you an invite to his party.
HEAVEN AND ELLIE
ELLIE Goulding reached new heights . . . by performing in this winged costume.
The Love Me Like You Do singer played a standout show for the final night of her Brightest Blue tour at London’s Eventim Apollo on Sunday and joked: “I feel like I could take off in this thing.”
While she was dressed in blue, the tour was all green.
Ellie, already working on new music for a record in 2022, wrote on Instagram afterwards: “We are plastic free, zero waste backstage and 100 per cent powered by renewables . . . This is how change happens.”
GRACE'S ROOT TO SUCCESS
FOUR years after missing out in the final of The X Factor, and a year after her record label folded, Grace Davies feels like she has a “new beginning”.
Grace finally has a chart hit – as an independent artist – with Roots, which she first performed on the telly talent show. It cracked the Top 100 on Friday.
Grace told me: “I was meant to release Roots a month before Syco closed down. It was gutting but having ownership of the track and putting it out now is one of the best things.
“Wherever it charts, it’s nice to be like, ‘I did that off my own back’. The reaction has been amazing. Now I feel like I can’t stop. This could be the new beginning I was waiting for.”
ED'S HEAD FEARS
ED Sheeran has revealed that he worries about his young daughter Lyra’s future mental health.
He said on Swedish TV: “I don’t want her to have the ability to have real lows.
“I would hate for her to have that. I know she will, as it runs in my family. But I would hate for her to feel sad and not know why.”
Ed’s mental health suffered in lockdown and he stopped writing songs. But after taking a break, he said, a feeling of falling back into depression pushed him to get creating again.
He revealed: “I just got sad. Any major thing that happens in my life, the most positive thing I can do from that is write a song.”
Mamma Mia here we go again
ABBA will release their new single on Friday . . . a track that is 43 years old.
The group will put out Just A Notion, ahead of their new album Voyage on November 5, having written the tune in 1978 during sessions for their album Voulez-Vous, which was released the following year.
They have shared a teaser snippet through their TikTok page.
In the clip, they sing: “We’ll be dancing through the night, knowing everything from there on must be right. Just a notion.”
COLD UP TOP
COLDPLAY have scored the best-selling album of 2021 so far, with Music Of The Spheres shifting 81,000 copies in three days.
It has overtaken Dave's We’re All Alone In This Together, which amassed 74,000 sales in its opening week in July.
Coldplay’s ninth album, featuring hits My Universe and Higher Power, is on course to surpass 100,000 sales in a week – the first time that has been done since Ed Sheeran's No. 6 Collaborations Project in July 2019.
RITA Ora must have been kicking herself after rejecting Marshmello and Selena Gomez hit single Wolves.
It has been revealed she originally recorded the tune, although it was eventually released in 2017 by Selena, which gave her a Top Ten hit.
The audio of Rita’s version has just leaked online, with fans describing it as her hit that got away.
