Jack Grealish's agent has suggested Manchester City and Pep Guardiola are showing better judgement over his client than England manager Gareth Southgate.

The fallout continues from Grealish's second-half substitution for England in their recent 1-1 draw with Hungary. Grealish was looking lively and creating problems, but he was the first to be substituted and England wouldn't go on to find a winner.

Grealish has made a bright start to life at City following his £100m move, with his status as a first-choice starter under Pep Guardiola underlined by his rest against Burnley ahead of the Champions League trip to Club Brugge this week.

And now his agent, Jonathan Barnett, says Grealish can go on to become one of the world's best at City, even if he questioned Southgate's management of his client at international level.

“He loves playing for England, he really does. He is very proud of it," Barnett said, via the Mirror.

It’s very important that he does well for England, very important. It was a mystery [his substitution]. It’s strange but maybe Gareth Southgate doesn’t think he fits into his type of team. He appears to have got into the England team by default.

“Gareth Southgate is the manager but in my opinion Jack is the best player in the country in that position.

“He’s one of the few who will put bums on seats. People go along to watch him. I think Pep Guardiola and all the people at Manchester City are good judges."

Expanding on his comments, Barnett said City's £100m commitment to sign Grealish shows how highly thought of he is at the Etihad, as he predicted more improvement from the no.10 as he continues to settle in at his new club.

“For them to lay out that sort of money (£100m), I think they know what they are doing," he added.

"I don’t think you have seen the best of him yet. He could become one of the best players in the world. Unfortunately if he doesn’t play enough for England it will be England’s loss – but he will achieve great things with Manchester City.

“Going forward people will recognise him for what he is. I’m not going to lose any sleep over that. He will be a great asset for Manchester City and we hope for England.

“Most of the people watching and the so-called experts all said the same thing, he was the best player on the field against Hungary.”
