ITV viewers have been left highly emotional watching the channel’s new Diana documentary - particulalry with a detail about her final stay in Paris.
The channel aired the film on Thursday to mark what would have been the late Princess of Wales’ 60th birthday next month.
It follows how Lady Diana Spencer’s life prior to getting engaged to Charles, Prince of Wales in 1981.
The pair’s fairytale wedding the same year saw the public fall in love with Diana and the royal becoming the focus of intense media attention.
In 1982, Diana and Charles eldest son, Prince William, and then welcomed their second child Prince Harry in 1984.
Diana went on to become the biggest star in the world but had been plagued by mental health issues including bulimia.
She was also unhappy in her marriage to Charles and was upset by his continued relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles.
Ultimately, the Wales’s marriage collapsed and the pair officially separated in 1992.
The couple went on to divorce in 1996 and Diana lost her HRH title but remained Diana, Princes of Wales.
Continuing her activism and support of charities, Diana remained a focus of media and public attention.
Diana tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 along with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and the car’s driver Henri Paul.
Following her death, the world has never forgotten Diana’s impact - especially not her beloved sons Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.
Featuring interviews with people who had first hand experiences with the iconic royal figure, the documentary prompted quite the reaction from viewers.
However, some viewers were left shocked to learn Diana's flight from Paris was delayed so she stayed in the city longer than planned and subsequently died there.
One Twitter user penned: "never knew Diana stayed in Paris another night because her flight was delayed.... How different things could have been #Diana ".
Another fan of the documentary wrote: "Watching the #Diana program now.. still get emotional after all this time .. what a beautiful sad iconic woman who I grew up in awe of .. such a sad ending to a beautiful life".
A third viewer tweeted: "if only if her flight wasn’t delayed [sad face emoji] #diana ".
Meanwhile another admirer of Diana commented: " #Diana would have been 60 next month, that still seems young, but remembering she has been gone nearly 24 years....tragic. She was a good one that one".
Elsewhere, another emotional social media user noted: "In absolute bits watching @itv#Diana all this time later it remains the most tragic of fairytales".
Finally, one viewer of ITV’s Diana documentary concluded: "So very sad. In the end it wasn’t about royalty or fame. It was that a 36 year old woman was killed and two boys lost their mum. Just awful #Diana ".
