India confirms Trump has sent Modi an invitation to the G7 in huge boost to relations

Now, India has now confirmed it has received an invite from Trump. All four countries are members of the G20, while Russia was in the G8 before being suspended for annexing Crimea. The summit has been postponed until September.

Trump told New Delhi in a phone call that he wanted to expand participation beyond the seven most advanced economies.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed: “In this context, he extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to attend the next G7 Summit to be held in USA.”

Mr Modi and Trump discussed the coronavirus pandemic, India-China border issues and the World Health Organisation.

The White House confirmed the US would ship 100 ventilators to India next week.

During the phone call, Trump mentioned his trip to India in February.

During this trip, he reopened the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, the largest cricket stadium in the world.

As for Russia’s invitation to the summit, Trump mentioned it at the 2019 summit.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte was the only leader to offer him any real support.

Japanese PM Shinzo Abe was said to be neutral.

Trump was said to be in favour of Russian entry for discussion on issues such as Iran, Syria and North Korea.

The other leaders were said to be reticent on the grounds that Russia was not a liberal democracy like the other members.

The European Union is also a G7 member and Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat said the EU "considers that the G7 format is a vital multilateral framework among countries guided by shared values, interests and commitments.”

South Korea and Australia appear to be set to attend.

A spokesman for Scott Morrison said: "The prime minister said he was once again pleased to take up the invitation to attend the G7, as he had done last year, when invited to do so by President Macron, in France."

Seoul’s Blue House indicated President Moon was willing to accept the invitation.

Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, explained: "President Putin is a supporter of dialogue in all directions, but in this case, in order to respond to such initiatives, we need to receive more information, which we unfortunately do not have.

"We don't know the details of this proposal yet, we don't know if it is official.”

Mr Peskov added the G20 gave Russia a platform to discuss international issue with other countries.

On why he wished to expand the group, Trump explained: “I don't feel that as a G7 it properly represents what's going on in the world.

“It's a very outdated group of countries,”

The other members are Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom.
